Being a mindful consumer is all about doing the best you can, when you can. It doesn’t mean being a perfect consumer, just a better one.
And while less wasteful habits start before you travel, there are some travel unique situations where you can implement less wasteful tactics you wouldn’t think you could.
Thrift, Don’t Shop
Instead of buying local sports team merchandise new, try thrift stores. There are some great gems to be found at local thrift stores.
The residents native to that area are more accustomed to their local teams and are more likely to give away those clothes. Don’t think you can’t find brand new sports merchandise at a Value Village.
This tip goes for more than just sports team, pretty much any local based clothes can be found at thrift stores. This also extends to knick knacks and hats as well!
Make The Cut
Bring your reusable silverware with you! When you’re traveling, you typically eat out more than you normally would. This includes restaurants and fast food.
If the reusable utinsils and food containers you have aren’t so travel friendly, there are smaller sets you can have for the sole purpose of traveling.
This one collapses and stores in a small box if space isn’t on your side.

Another option is an all in one set that stores in a small pouch, like the one below.

If you’re looking a more economical option, you can always pack your own silverware and keep it in a small bag!
The Last Straw
Bring that reusable straw!
Using reusable straws are always a great idea for your everyday life. It is something that can become mindless really easily with time and practice.
If your reusable straw is not as travel friendly, try using a collapsible one you can stick in your bag or on your keychain. This makes for less weight and space when you’re already strapped for those things when on the road.
Whether you grab the one below or a different one, make sure you get one with a collapsible straw brush and rubber ends. This will save your teeth and cleaning time later down the road.

Drink It Up
Utilize fountain machines.
If you are using a reusable food set with you when you travel, having a reusable cup is probably on the list.
Having a reusable cup makes it easier to fill up with your favorite beverage if it’s offered at a fountain machine, which is at most gas stations. This will help cut back on the plastic or glass bottles you buy when you are on the road!
Below is a great travel sized cup if you are on a size constraint. If that isn’t a worry, check out The Only Reusable Cup You’ll Need.
