Sunscreen keeps us safe, right? Of course it does! But unfortunately there are some long term consequences that negatively impact our ocean’s reefs.

Beginning January 2021, Hawaii will implement their Bill 2571 that bans the sale of any sunscreens that contain Octinoxate and Oxybenzone. Brands like Sun Bum are reformulating their products that do contain these chemicals.

While only applicable to Hawaii, this is a great first step towards more commercial products becoming eco conscience. With this new bill forcing companies to produce reef safe products, there are more options on the market to choose from!

While choosing a sunscreen that is reef safe is the best choice, there are options if you are not able to get your hands on some or are going through the products you already have to reduce waste. If you are using a product that does contain Octinoxate and/or Oxybenzone, make sure to rise off before getting in the ocean or pools.
